COMPUTER PROBLEMS

Have a friend that had PC problems was doing an update and suddenly just went to a blue screen.
I am no computer guru but told her to bring it over and see what I could do
Finally after a lot of restarts and safety modes, it came up in a safe mode
Did a restore to an earlier date and then went from there
She had one virus protection program on the PC
One will not catch all the viruses and malware that is out there
You need to run other software to check stuff
I found over 890 dangerous Trojans and viruses and have no idea how many spyware, adaware and malware on it
Please people if you are going to have a PC run more than one virus protector once in a while
Download any of the free ones and then put your normal one on hold , run the downloaded one.
You can then uninstall the downloaded one start yours back up and download another one
I have tried all the name brand ones and have not found one that catches everything
Microsoft security essentials is good, as well as www.superantispyware.com has a free one
Trend micro is another
Look for a software that will search for key loggers and run it as well
You may be surprised how much better your PC may run if you try some different software to look for what is hidden

Excellent post Doc,

I cannot remember how many times I have told people here to be careful about puter security and still people fail to realise how easy hackers can get into your machine with all sorts of naughty progs.

My ISP provides me with MacAfee Anti-Virus which updates at least 4 times a day. So everyone must leave their AV prog on auto update.
One problem; if you have more than one AV prog in your puter running at the same time, they can clash and cause severe issues. It seems that it is safer to have just one.
As to malware; I downloaded the free version of Malwarebytes from malwarebytes.com. I have found it to be outstanding at catching all the little naughties that some sites try to download in the background. It is an American prog that I think will cost about $25.00 for the full premium prog. WELL worth it!
One more piece of advice; make sure the AV is set to automatic scan and let it scan at least once a week.

I'll say it again: BE SAFE! Hackers want your personal details. With a site like GG where we access online gambling, it can become very easy for them to follow you in to your bank and credit card details and then quite simply you find yourself cleaned out!

BEFORE I FORGET;
PLease tell your friend Doc that she will have to change ALL her passwords for every site or e-mail provider she may have. Trojans and keyloggers, as we know, want this all important access!

Phil

I use to be plagued by all of these problems, but about five years ago I discoved an excellent website for all of your computer questions and answers. I normally don't promote websites, and I don't know if it's ok to post here;, but it's called Majorgeeks. It has hundreds of programs (all of them has been tested, rated, and classified) to keep your computer running tip top shape. They also have a forum that will provide you with guides and tutorials to clean up and keep your computer running good.
Its worth checking out. http://www.majorgeeks.com
