This is the hardest weekend of the year for me

As you take time to celebrate this great day, please take the time to visit the grave of a fallen soldier. You do not have to know him I do. Tell him you came on my behalf.
Take your child or grandchild or a neighborhood of kids along and tell them about the sacrifice that this one gave for freedom. Tell them what this day really stands for
At the same time reflect on the other countries that gave their young to defend that same freedom
Not a day goes by that I do not Thank the ones that paid that ultimate price so I could live and enjoy a life
Not a day goes by that I do not hurt for the ones I could not save and agonize over having to make the decision of who I could help and had the best chance of survival
Those brothers depended on me to care and treat for them and oh so many would tell me Doc if the day comes that you have to decide who to help ,do what you have to do we understand
So many stood up and took a bullet or a piece of shrapnel for me, so many gave their life making sure I got to someone that was down and yelling for help
These men it seems when my time was up would stand up and say take me, Doc still has a lot to do and is needed back home.
I spent 11 months in the rice paddies and bush of Vietnam. Most medics spent six months.
I have all the medals and the citations but would gladly give them all up to have those lives back
So take a moment and make a visit, as you may be the only one that goes there. Tell that soldier that because of him you know me
and tell him that I hope as he looks down and sees what I have done with my life that I have done him proud .
Tell him I have never forgotten what he gave up so I could have a family and enjoy watching 4 sons grow up and be with a wife that I came back to and still together after 47 years
Take your young and remind them of what was given up so Doc could eat BBQ, drink beer and be with friends
It only takes a few minutes out of your weekend.
Pick up a Flag and place on a grave of a soldier let him Know I am thinking of him . He may not have family that can do it
I can't make them all I wish I could but to those that did not come back I thank you and hold you in the highest esteem
Do not thank a Veteran that is alive . Go Thank the ones that aren't
They will never know how grateful I am as well as my family
To all of you may you have a very happy weekend and enjoy the freedom we have to be able to do it

Well done Doc, excellent post.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Phil,
I know you always remember not only those from the USA but other countries as well
I usually always get a e-mail from you on this day and Veterans day
We are oceans apart but share a common bond of trying to keep this weekend and this special day
alive and what it truly means
That you cannot do until you stand at that gravesite and place a flag the top of that stone and realize that was a son a daughter a husband a wife a Dad a Mom a brother or sister that has paid the price for all of us

Thanks Doc,
2 stories for you.

#1; I had a good go at losing my testicles, not once, but twice! If it were not for people like you, I would have spent the rest of my life singing soprano.

#2; After all this stupid business of a Scottish referendum and one more to come on our continued membership of the EU. I had a very heated argument with an ignorant and arrogant individual who tried to convince me that it was the EU that had kept Europe free and safe since WW2. In no uncertain terms I informed him that it had been and will continue to be the USA that has kept us safe by basing enormous numbers of troops and equipment of all services here in Europe. That stopped the advance of communism and ensured that conflicts were kept to a minimum.

Just three more words:

'Brothers-in-Arms', ALWAYS.

Phil

Belated Thanks!

Belated Thanks!

Sorry, I'm so late responding, but you and all our service people are sooooo taken for granted.
Being from a small town, we would always have a Memorial Day service at the courthouse square, where they would place miniature flags represented the fallen soldiers from our county.
Amazing such a small town, but the courthouse lawn was completely covered with flags.
We always went because I lost two uncles in World War II. One never came home and is still missing from DDay.

After the ceremonies, they would take each of the flags and spend the next days placing them on the tombs at all the cemeteries where the fallen soldiers were buried.

Just remembering ......and hope more people realize they gave the ultimate price for our freedom.
